Dr. David Foley Ph.D. (AUGUSTA, Ga.)

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Entered into rest March 11, 2003, Dr. David Michael Foley, 65, husband of the late Anne Tyler Gatewood Foley. David was born on May 2, 1937 in Springfield, Ohio to Alice Barnhardt Foley and the late Neil David Foley. As a young adult in Charlotte, N.C., David was the founder and president of the Mecklenburg County Young Democrats Club. He graduated from ODonoghue High School. He received his B.A. from Belmont Abbey College and his M.A. from Auburn University. He went on to earn his Ph.D. in West African history from the University of London School of Economics in 1965. He and his wife then moved to West Africa where David taught at the University of Sierra Leone. In subsequent years, he was a professor at the University of Georgia and Augusta College. In 1986 David had the distinct honor of being named a Fulbright Professor of African History at the University of Liberia. He was a member of the Baronial Order of the Magna Carta. In his seventeen years in Augusta, he was a member of the Summerville Neighborhood Association, served on the Human Relations Commission, and was President of the Augusta Genealogical Society. David was a member of St. Mary on the Hill Church. David is survived by his mother, Alice Barnhardt Foley of Charlotte; his daughters, Julia Foley Morgan of Augusta and Elizabeth Foley Meckert of Atlanta; three grandchildren: Anne Tyler Morgan, Neal Phillip Morgan and Andrew Tyler Meckert; his brother, Peter Foley of Charlotte; his sister, Alice Foley of Charlotte; three nephews and one niece, all of Charlotte. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 15, 2003 at 2 p.m. at the graveside at Westover Memorial Park with Reverend Cynthia Taylor officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the graveside.
