'Groovie Granny' inducted by shrine

COLUMBIA - The late Mary Lawson "Groovie Granny" Delage of Chapin, S.C., at one time believed to be the nation's only woman striped bass fishing guide, has been induct-ed as a "Legendary Guide" into the National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame in Hay-ward, Wis.

Bill Baab, fishing editor of The Augusta Chronicle, last year nominated Mrs. Delage for the honor. She died at the age of 80 last December.

Baab presented a plaque de-signed by the shrine to mem-bers of her family, including daughter Mary of Travelers Rest, S.C., and son Ted of Irmo, last Tuesday at the Mid-lands Striper Club meeting in Columbia.

"Mother loved her fishing and Lake Murray," her son said, "and she taught all of us to love fishing of any kind, too."

A memorial service is being planned on Lake Murray where "Granny" was a U.S. Coast Guard-licensed fishing guide for more than a quarter of a century.
