Promoters want people to buy tickets in advance

Joe Stevenson and David Plunkett have hatched a fiendish plot.

The pair, best known for their roles in the stalwart Augusta act People Who Must, are promoting a show featuring local favorites the Big Mighty and Daze of Haze. The catch is, only 250 tickets will be sold, and only in advance.

The idea stems from what Mr. Stevenson and Mr. Plunkett perceive as a real problem in Augusta - nobody likes to buy advance tickets.

"This is something that has been ongoing and it scares promoters," Mr. Stevenson said. "Nobody ever knows how many people are going to show up and it has been that way for as long as I can remember. So really, the idea with this isn't to promote the Big Mighty and Daze of Haze, but to baby step things, to see what we can do with advance tickets."

Mr. Stevenson said he hopes changing attitudes toward buying advance tickets will have something of a trickle-up effect and will eventually convince touring artists that Augusta is not the oft-talked-about concert dead zone. He admits, however, that the blame should fall as squarely on local bands as fans.

"People always talk about how slack Augusta is, that people just don't show up for things," he said. "But I think a lot of that has to do with the way shows are promoted. If you promote a show, tell people tickets are $10 at the door, and then it rains, people will just stay away."

Mr. Plunkett moved to Augusta from Atlanta on Jan. 26. He said as an outsider, he has the luxury of seeing Augusta not for its problems, but for its possibilities.

"I'm looking at this as a great opportunity to try and change people's mentality," he said. "I look at Augusta as an extremely good opportunity to do anything you want to do, music-wise, because there is an audience here. The trick is getting them out to the show, and the secret there is making it an event, something to look forward to, something you'll buy tickets for."
