Police charge men with drug trafficking

Two men were arrested Monday after officers found more than a kilogram of cocaine and $20,000 inside a Martinez apartment, police said.

Gary R. Adams, of the 2300 block of Naple Drive, and James Lester, of the 300 block of Apple Jack Crossing in the Apple Crossing apartment complex, were charged with trafficking in cocaine, according to Columbia County jail records. No bond had been set late Monday for either man.

David Santos, a narcotics investigatorfor the Richmond County Sheriff's Office, arrested Mr. Adams on Monday at the Augusta Travelodge on Washington Road while conducting a search warrant, said Richmond County sheriff's Investigator Brian Valee.

Investigator Valee said the Martinez apartment where Mr. Adams was staying was searched after a few ounces of cocaine were found inside his hotel room. At the apartment, police said, they found 1,135 grams of cocaine - about a "gallon Ziploc bag full" worth $30,000 on the street, Investigator Valee said.

"You don't come by them very often," he said.

Mr. Adams was being held at the Richmond County jail Monday night, awaiting extradition to Columbia County. Mr. Lester was taken to the Columbia County Detention Center.

Investigator Valee said that more arrests are possible.
