STATESBORO, Ga. -- Georgia State reliever Tony Wright threw a wild pitch while attempting an intentional walk in the sixth inning, scoring the decisive run in a 3-2 victory by Georgia Southern on Tuesday.
With Southern (4-2) ahead 2-1, Carlos Love walked and advanced to second on Greg Dowling's single to right. Both advanced on a balk, and Love ran home to make it 3-1 as Wright attempted to load the bases.
Georgia State (2-1) cut the lead to 3-2 with a run-scoring double by Sean Fitzgerald in the seventh.
John Carroll (1-0) got his first college win after relieving Scott Tolbert with two outs and the bases loaded in the fifth. Brett Strickland (0-1) yielded all three Georgia Southern runs while giving up five hits, walking one and fanning six in five-plus innings.
