Fox has one of its best TV ratings week in years

NEW YORK -- Fox rode the very large wave of "American Idol" to its biggest ratings week in years.

The network, which had been having a tough season until January, had its largest weekly audience in five years for prime-time programming that did not include a major sporting event, Nielsen Media Research said Tuesday.

"American Idol" drew 26.5 million viewers for the first night of its second season last Tuesday, and just under 25 million for the second episode Wednesday.

Fox's other reality sensation, "Joe Millionaire," was also in the top 10.

The success is likely to continue: "Joe Millionaire" this Monday was seen by 20.3 million, that series' largest audience yet. It was 18.8 million last week.

The ratings accomplishment was overshadowed somewhat by the Super Bowl, which enabled ABC to win the week's ratings race. The game, viewed by an average of 88.6 million people, gave ABC an average of 22.5 million viewers for the week (11.7 rating, 18 share).

Fox averaged 12.2 million viewers (7.1 rating, 11 share), CBS had 10.7 million (7.2, 11), NBC had 10 million (6.6, 10), the WB had 4 million (2.5, 4), UPN had 3.4 million (2.1, 3) and Pax TV had 1.1 million (0.8, 1). Fox's rating was lower than CBS', even though it had more viewers, because more people were watching CBS programs while alone.

NBC's "Nightly News" won the evening news ratings race, averaging 11.5 million viewers (8.3 rating, 15 share). ABC's "World News Tonight" was second, averaging 10.9 million viewers (7.5, 14) and the "CBS Evening News" had 9.6 million (6.9, 12).

A ratings point represents 1,067,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 106.7 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show.
