Georgia girls prep basketball capsules

COACH: John Ribock, second year

2001 RECORD: 18-12

RETURNING STARTERS: C Mary Douglas (5-9, 135)

OUTLOOK: Only one starter returns for the Fighting Irish, last season's Region 7-A champions. Ribock will have a lot of work to do with this young and inexperienced squad.

COACH: Angelica Collins, third year

2001 RECORD: 15-10

RETURNING STARTERS: F Larrell Lewis (Sr., 5-9, 145); F Deondra Sharpe (Sr., 5-10, 148); G Candace Clinton (Sr., 5-6, 135); PG Tiffany Jones (Sr., 5-7, 150).

OUTLOOK: The Bears have four seniors returning from last season's playoff team. Newcomer Dalania Mack takes over at the point and how she handles her duties will be key to the team's success.

COACH: Nisharro Usry, second year

2001 RECORD: not available

RETURNING STARTERS: PG Deena Allen (Sr.); G/F Adrian Troupe (Sr.)

OUTLOOK: The Bulldogs are young after losing six seniors from last season. Allen and Troupe are seniors and will be looked to for guidance and leadership.

COACH: Al Young, first year

2001 RECORD: N/A

RETURNING STARTERS: G Dameika Adams (Sr., 5-6, 135); G Keisha Johnson (Sr., 5-4, 125); F Lacora Lewis (So., 5-8, 145); C Ashley Staten (Jr., 6-1, 175).

OUTLOOK: The Razorbacks have four returning starters and have plenty of quickness and grit. If they can gain some early self-confidence, Young believes the team will do well in Region 3-AAAA.

COACH: Tim Whitfield, second years

2001 RECORD: 6-19

RETURNING STARTERS: F Christi Steflik (Sr., 6-0); C Ashley Brodhecker (Jr., 6-0); Anna Cheely (Sr., 5-5).

OUTLOOK: The Knights are in a new region this year and looking to improve on a disappointing season. Whitfield has depth and speed to work with.

COACH: Richard Moye, second year

2001 RECORD: 5-25

RETURNING STARTERS: G Morgan Lamb (Jr., 5-4, 105); C Jamis Braddock (Soph., 6-0, 200); F Tiffany Bright (Sr., 5-9, 160)

OUTLOOK: The team hasn't won a region title in more than 17 years and is coming off a disappointing season. Braddock must play big inside to help change Glascock's fortunes.

COACH: Bernard Bowman, fifth year

2001 RECORD: 31-2

RETURNING STARTERS: G/F Mariah Whitfield (Sr., 5-10, 155); Tyhiesha Smith (Jr., 6-1, 150); C/F Reyna Flemmings (Jr., 5-10, 165); G Gala Holder (Soph., 5-6, 135); F Sharueal Grant (Sr., 5-8, 170); Shequita Williams (Sr., 5-8, 160)

OUTLOOK: Last year's Class AAAA champions return another deep and talented squad. The team's size is a question, but its other attributes could make up for it.

COACH: Paul Greenway, first year

2001 RECORD: 10-16

RETURNING STARTERS: F Katie Sutherland (Sr., 6-2); G Amy Rigdon (Jr., 5-5); G Kiley Moranski (Jr., 5-3)

OUTLOOK: Sutherland will be relied on heavily as the only returning senior starter. The Lady Wolfpack are young, inexperienced and could struggle again this year.

COACH: Melissa Chase, first year

2001 RECORD: 7-19

RETURNING STARTERS: F Sharday Taylor (Jr., 5-8)

OUTLOOK: With only one returning starter, the Bulldogs could face another tough year. The team lost five seniors and doesn't have a lot of experience.

COACH: George Samples, seventh year

2001 RECORD: 5-19

RETURNING STARTERS: F Lashunda Holmes (Jr., 5-8, 150); Frankie Dixon (Jr., 5-6, 165); F Kashaundra Hannah (Soph., 5-10, 165); G Sanquella Brown (Sr,. 5-8, 140); G Lacey James (Sr., 5-8, 165); PG Shironda Cooper (Jr., 5-0, 100); F Valencia Lofton (Sr., 5-9, 150); Valencia Gaines (Sr., 5-9, 148)

OUTLOOK: The good news is just about the whole team returned for the Warriors, but last year's concerns - quality shooters and speed - remain, too.

COACH: Joey Kirkland, fifth year

2001 RECORD: 19-6

RETURNING STARTERS: F Vontrease Smith (Jr., 5-11, 155); G Whitney Muckerson (Jr., 5-6, 130); G Shavone Coney (Jr., 5-5, 125); C Lakindie Gross (Jr., 5-11, 175); F Cassandra McGriff (Jr., 5-10, 160)

OUTLOOK: The Eagles will be strong again with two Division I prospects, Muckerson and Smith, leading the way. The team wants to pass last season's playoff push to the Class AA Sweet 16.

COACH: Lynn Brantley, 33rd year

2001 RECORD: 17-9

RETURNING STARTERS: G Tiana Brice (Sr., 5-5); F/G Waldrina Etheridge (Sr., 5-6); C Shika Cunningham (Sr., 6-3)

OUTLOOK: The Eagles were bounced in the first round of the Region 3-AAA tournament last season. Depth and playoff experience are pluses, but Brantley must find a point guard.

COACH: Otis Smarts, 20th year

2001 RECORD: 20-10

RETURNING STARTERS: G Tammy Hollins (Soph., 5-1, 120); G/F Sabrina Wilson (Jr., 5-9, 130); C Shawanda Geter (Sr., 6-2, 144); F Tamika Briscoe (Sr., 5-9, 138)

OUTLOOK: The Wildcats' run ended in the second round of the Class AAA playoffs last year. They return two top scorers, Wilson (15.3) and Briscoe (10.3).

COACH: Christie Mattison, ninth year

2001 RECORD: 16-8

RETURNING STARTERS: G Michelle Elam (Sr., 5-4); G Vickie Anderson (Sr., 5-6); G Catrina Norman (Jr., 5-6); PG Grace Lockhart (Jr., 5-3)

OUTLOOK: The Lady Red Devils lost their leading scorer, Angoneckia Booker, but the rest of the squad remains intact in a push to finish better than third in Region 7-A.

COACH: Pat Rivers, 23rd year

2001 RECORD: 20-6

RETURNING STARTERS: G Latoshia Broadwater (Sr., 5-8, 115); C Marie Reid (Jr., 6-2, 140); F Cicely Cooper (Sr., 5-1, 144); G Danielle Daniels (Sr., 5-6, 117)

OUTLOOK: The Lady Musketeers won the Region 3-AAA title, then were upset in the first round of the playoffs. The team has depth and experience - as well as Reid, who should be a force in the middle.

COACH: Telly Wright, fourth year

2001 RECORD: 4-19

RETURNING STARTERS: F Ash Mingle (Jr., 5-10, 140); G Juaquanna Abraham, (Sr., 5-7, 125); F Alicia Phett (6-0, 140); G Octavia Carter (5-7, 125)

OUTLOOK: After a struggle last season, the Gamecocks have hope for this year. Four starters return for Wright.

COACH: Bobby Andrews, eighth year

2001 RECORD: 30-3

RETURNING STARTERS: G Shayla Roberts (Sr., 5-7, 145); G Kellie Johnson (Sr., 5-5, 125); F Marissa Saulsberry (Sr., 5-10, 150); F Maria Branch (Sr., 5-10, 150)

OUTLOOK: The Tigers return almost their entire team from last season's Class AAA state finalist. The four returning starters will share the leadership roles in a quest to get back to the Final Four.

COACH: Nu Nu Newsome, second year

2001 RECORD: 19-12

RETURNING STARTERS: PG Jennifer Bell (Jr., 5-6, 108); F Terease Thorton (Jr., 6-3, 150); F Keshia Farmer (Sr., 6-0, 140); F Akeria Golutt (Sr., 6-0, 140)

OUTLOOK: The Bulldogs made the Elite Eight, losing to eventual Class AAAA champion Glenn Hills. The loss of Monica Martin hurts, but they do return a strong core and should challenge for another playoff spot.

COACH: Antonio Hill, second year

2001 RECORD: 12-12

RETURNING STARTERS: C Kesley Grissom (So., 6-1); ?, F Laquita Carter (Jr., 5-8); F Shanita Wilburn (Jr., 5-4)

OUTLOOK: Nine players return for the Screaming Eagles, but Hill will have his hands full with a young squad.

COACH: Allen Gray, fifth year

2001 RECORD: 16-10

RETURNING STARTERS: G Colleen Kitchens (Jr., 5-7, 130); C Ernestine Hilson (Soph., 6-0, 165)

OUTLOOK: Kitchens returns with averages of 14.8 points and 8 rebounds per game. They'll need every bit of it; a young team could struggle after a solid season last year.

COACH: Renee Kelly, fourth year

2001 RECORD: 6-19

RETURNING STARTERS: P Charvette Collier (Jr.); F Tiffany Ford (Jr.); G Alyson Russell (Sr.); G Dartavia Thomas (So.); F Tiana Patterson (Sr.)

OUTLOOK: The Patriots return all five of last year's starters and could challenge for a playoff spot. Kelly is looking for someone to step up and take control of the team.
