Instead of a "build it and they will come" philosophy, we need to ask some hard questions about building a new civic center. First of all, how much does it cost to bring top-notch popular entertainers to Augusta? What must ticket prices be to cover that cost, plus the cost of building and maintaining the new facility? Are there really enough people in the area willing to buy pricey tickets on more than just a once-in-a-while basis? I doubt it.
How many civic centers will we have to build before the powers that be understand that the Augusta area cannot support such a facility? Also, one might want to look into just who it is who will profit from building this white elephant.
