NBC wins Nielsen week, but ABC shows some signs of life

NEW YORK -- Thanks to a bachelor-trashing session and Jennifer Lopez, ABC showed some signs of life last week.

The struggling network had its biggest weekly audience of the season, even though it still finished third behind NBC and CBS. ABC also finished second to NBC among the advertiser-friendly 18-to-49-year-old age demographic for the first time this season.

Its most popular show was "The Bachelor," which heads toward a conclusion this week. An audience of 16.7 million people watched women who had been rejected by the bachelor get the chance to strike back.

Lopez was interviewed on "Primetime Live," one of a string of big-name interviews on ABC News this month.

NBC, in a tight struggle with CBS for "sweeps" month supremacy, had six of the top 11 shows in the ratings. Niles' illness on "Frasier" helped the comedy to a stronger-than-usual showing.

For the week, NBC averaged 13.6 million viewers (9.0 rating, 14 share), CBS had 12.7 million viewers (8.4, 13), ABC had 10.6 million (6.8, 11), Fox 7.7 million (4.7, 7), the WB 4.7 million (2.9, 5), UPN 4.2 million (2.6, 4) and Pax TV 1.2 million (0.9, 1).

NBC's "Nightly News" won the evening news ratings race, averaging 11.1 million viewers (8.0 rating, 15 share). ABC's "World News Tonight" was second, averaging 10.8 million viewers (7.6, 14) and the "CBS Evening News' had 9.1 million (6.4, 12).

A ratings point represents 1,067,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 106.7 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show.
