COLUMBIA, S.C.- Funeral Services for Leroy "Coach" Rogers of Juniper Street, Columbia, will be held at 1 p.m on today at Second Calvary Baptist Church in Columbia, with burial in Memorial Gardens of Columbia. Coach Rogers will lie in state on today beginning at 12 noon. Leevys Funeral Home. 1831 Taylor Street, Columbia is in charge. "Coach" Rogers, as students and former athletes affectionately called him, was born in Huntington, West Virginia on January 20, 1925. He was the son of the late Leroy R. Rogers and Cora Clark Rogers. "Coach" Rogers died Tuesday, November 12, 2002 at Palmetto Health Richland Hospital. He was a member of Second Calvary Baptist Church where he served faithfully on the Usher Board, He graduated from Allen University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Health and Physical Education. He furthered his studies at South Carolina State University and Indiana University. He taught health and physical education and coached football, basketball, and golf at C. A. Johnson High School during his thirty-one years of service. He was a member of NEA-R and SCEA-R Associations. Surviving are his wife, Thelma G. Rogers, sons, Leroy O. (Victoria) Rogers, Jr. of Augusta, and Ronald T. (JoAnne) Rogers, of Troy, Mich; sister, Carlette R. (John) Webb, five grandchildren, four great-grandchidlren, and he was a surrogate father to Wilbert Sterling.
