MONCKS CORNER, S.C. - South Aiken rallied from a two-touchdown deficit in the second half, but Berkeley kicked a 37-yard field goal with 2:17 to play for a 24-21 victory in the first round of the Class AAAA Division II playoffs Friday night.
South Aiken (7-5) took a 6-0 on the first of two touchdown passes from Byron Bush to Roman Hicks on the first play of the second quarter. Berkeley then scored the next three touchdowns for a 21-6 lead late in the first half.
The Thoroughbreds responded with a quick scoring drive before halftime, capped by Bush's second strike to Hicks. They tied the game in the fourth quarter on Rashad Hunter's 8-yard TD run with just under 10 minutes to play.
After Berkeley's field goal, the Thoroughbreds made one last drive and got to the Berkeley 25. On third-and-12, Bush was called for intentional grounding, which cost them 15 yards. Chad Smith attempted a 54-yard field goal to tie, but it came up several yards short.
