TWIN CITY, Ga. - Peebles-Curry- Durden Mortuary announces the death of Joseph Eugene "Gene" Weatherford, age 81, of Twin City, on Thursday, November 14, 2002, at his residence after a brief illness. Funeral services will be Saturday, November 16, 2002, at 2 p.m. in the Twin City First Baptist Church with Rev. Franklin Sasser and Elder Tommy Rountree officiating. Interment will be in the Old Canoochee Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery near Swainsboro. Pallbearers are Irvin Brinson, Lewis Johnson, Sr., Morris Grimes, Glen Way, John Whetsell, Tharlton Weatherford, G. W. Johnson, Ed Marsh, Elliott Marsh, Gregory Gowen. Honorary Pallbearers are members of the Twin City First Baptist Church Mens Sunday School Class. The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service. The family will receive friends at Peebles-Curry-Durden Mortuary Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. Mr. Weatherford was a native of Emanuel County. He graduated from South Georgia Junior College in 1940, attended Stetson Law School in 1946, and graduated from Georgia Teachers College in Statesboro in 1947 with a B. S. Degree in Education, Social Science Major. He finished his Graduate work at Jacksonville University, Jacksonville, Fla. in 1971 and completed a three year course of study at the University of Florida College of Law in 1977 as directed by the Florida Supreme Court. Mr. Weatherford was a WW II Navy veteran serving in the Pacific Theatre. He served from 1942-1946; going through the enlisted ranks to commissioned ranks and was discharged as Lieutenant. He was a school teacher and coach at Hilliard, Fla. from 1947 to 1952 and was in private business form 1952 to1956. He was County Judge of Nassau County, Fla. from 1957 to 1985. Mr. Weatherford served as Chairman of the Nassau District Boy Scouts, Board of Directors for the North Florida Council of Boy Scouts, President of the Fernandina Beach P.T.A., Lions Club and Shrine Club. He was Chairman of the Red Cross, President of the Nassau Community Chest-United Fund, and the Fernandina Beach Housing Authority. He served on the Board of Trustees with the Baptist Home for Children, Board of Directors of North Florida Childrens Home Society and Board of Trustees, First Baptist Church, Fernandina Beach. He also served on the Rayonier Scholarship Committee, Governors Task Force and served twice as President of the Florida County Judges Association. He was a Mason and a Shriner, a member of the Twin City First Baptist Church, the Mens Sunday School Class and was three-time recipient of the Good Government Award. Survivors include, his wife, Peggy Marsh Weatherford of Twin City; one son and daughter-in-law, Joseph E. and Carol Weatherford, Jr. of Conyers; one daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne W. and Mike Graham of Birmingham, Ala.; five grandchildren, Joseph E. Weatherford, III, Kimber Leigh Weatherford and Kacey Marie Weatherford of Conyers, and Michael Graham and Matthew Graham of Birmingham, Ala. Peebles-Curry-Durden Mortuary is in charge of arrangements for the funeral of Joseph Eugene "Gene" Weatherford of Twin City, Ga.
