Young: a leader since childhood

I've known the man since childhood. When I first met Bob Young, it was in the fourth-grade class of Mrs. Elliot at the Laura Jones School in Thomson, Ga.

I'm sure you know how it can be for a new student at a new school, but Mr. Young did not have a problem. It was apparent from the beginning that he had leadership qualities; even a fourth-grader could see that.

Through his humor and quick wit, he soon made friends with all of us. From that point on - all the way through high school - Bob Young proved his leadership qualities to both the faculty and his fellow students.

Another comfort to me was being able to hear his voice over the airwaves in Vietnam. Hearing "This is Airman 1st Class Bob Young reporting" made me smile, and I didn't feel so far away from home.

Augusta, the man is still first class, so remember that when it's time to vote for your mayor. Also, get out and vote. He and I both fought for that right.
