Can you imagine the problems if the South Carolina High School League would have had if it allowed Marlboro County and Northwestern back into the Class AAAA playoffs?
No. 1, it would have lost all credibility with coaches, players and parents.
Get a bum deal on that new coach? Sue the SCHSL. Your team stinks? Sue the SCHSL. Not enough playing time? Sue the SCHSL. Get hit by a bus? Sue the SCHSL.
With its ruling Thursday - upholding the decision to suspend the two teams from the playoffs after the programs were involved in a Sept. 13 brawl - the high school league saved itself a ton of legal hassle.
No. 2, the Class AAAA playoffs won't be forced to boycott the postseason.
Believe me, it was a definite possibility for the teams already in the playoffs - including South Aiken and North Augusta - if Marlboro County and Northwestern were allowed in.
Yeah, it's not fair to the innocent players who are a part of the Marlboro County and Northwestern squads. But remember how coaches always say, "We'll win as a team, and we'll lose as a team"?
That also means they get suspended as a team.
My record from last week: 9-1
WJBF sports director John Hart's record from last week: 7-3
Reason why there's only eight games this week: I've boycotted the Class AAAA picks this week.
No. 2 Screven County (9-0) at Appling County (7-1-1)
Screven County hasn't missed a beat without Michael Cooper. If the Gamecocks win tonight, I might have to take a trip to Sylvania.
My pick: Screven County 31, Appling County 10
John's pick: Screven County
No. 1 Thomson (9-1) at Baldwin (8-1)
You think Thomson's scared? You'd be wrong. The Bulldogs shoo away Baldwin with no problems.
My pick: Thomson 49, Baldwin 7
John's pick: Thomson
No. 4 Washington County (8-1) at Jefferson County (3-6)
The only consolation the Warriors will take from this game is that they're in the playoffs with only three wins.
My pick: Washington County 38, Jefferson County 14
John's pick: Washington County
Josey (1-8) at Richmond Academy (2-7)
I barely even have an opinion about this game.
My pick: Richmond Academy 28, Josey 13
John's pick: Josey
No. 6 Laney (8-1) at Harlem (5-4)
Harlem's got nothing to play for. Ergo, the Bulldogs have no chance to win.
My pick: Laney 27, Harlem 17
John's pick: Laney
Latta (9-2) at Blackville-Hilda (10-1)
I can't get over how easily the Hawks dominated Elloree last week. Latta won't be nearly the pushover, but Blackville-Hilda still should win.
My pick: Blackville-Hilda 21, Latta 14
John's pick: Blackville-Hilda
Wilson (7-4) at Midland Valley (7-4)
The Mustangs have too many offensive weapons for Wilson.
My pick: Midland Valley 17, Wilson 7
John's pick: Midland Valley
Cheraw (9-2) at Silver Bluff (8-3)
I'm sure this matchup makes the Bulldogs a little nervous. But I stand by my assertion that Silver Bluff will advance to the state semifinals at least.
My pick: Silver Bluff 17, Cheraw 13
John's pick; Silver Bluff
