SOTOGRANDE, Spain -- Angel Cabrera birdied his last four holes on the way to an 8-under-par 63 Thursday in the first round of the Volvo Masters at Valderrama.
Cabrera has a four-shot lead over Phillip Price of Wales. Five players are at 68.
Cabrera, winner of the Benson and Hedges International at The Belfry in May, called his round "one of those you would dream of when you go to play a tournament." His round was one shot off the course record of 62 set by Bernhard Langer in 1994.
"I was in the rough very few times but always very near the fairway. So I haven't had any problems, really," Cabrera said.
Retief Goosen shot a 73 and Padraig Harrington shot a 74. Harrington got off to a poor start when he called a two-stroke penalty on himself at the first hole for repairing a pitch mark on the fringe of the green.
Harrington also had a double-bogey on No. 17 after hitting his second shot into water.
"I hit a lot of ugly putts out there," Harrington said.
