South Carolina's Howell to miss first six games

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- South Carolina forward Ivan Howell will miss the first six games of the season after he was declared academically ineligible for the fall semester.

Coach Dave Odom said Howell can practice with the team but can't play in any games until the semester ends on Dec. 16. He'll be eligible to play in that night's game against Wofford, Odom said.

Under NCAA rules, an athlete must complete 24 hours of degree credit per academic year to remain eligible. Howell did that but received a D in a course required for his major, which doesn't accept D's for credit.

Odom said Howell, a junior majoring in retail management, is on schedule to graduate in August.

Howell was a reserve for the Gamecocks last season, averaging 2.7 points and just under 1 rebound.
