Supports DeVaney's statements

Regarding the Oct. 22 letter by SFC Kent A. Briley ("DeVaney's military slur defensive") concerning former Augusta Mayor Charles DeVaney's statements about a drunken soldier from Fort Gordon: I support his statements and would like to know what actions were taken against the soldier.

I have been assigned or have worked at Fort Gordon for the past 30 years, and I have seen a decline in discipline and respect over the past years. I personally know of incidents that would have resulted in military punishment under the Uniform Code of Military Justice in the past, but today result in a slap on the wrist.

I have had young soldiers in training at Fort Gordon tell me that they were disappointed in basic training; they said they wanted more discipline and higher standards. I know of other retired and ex-military who have experienced the same at Fort Gordon.
