Fox trying to move on from low-rated World Series

NEW YORK -- Even though Fox won the weekly Nielsen ratings last week, it didn't get nearly the boost it hoped for from the World Series and now is a few steps behind its rivals in establishing its fall schedule.

Postseason baseball has disrupted the start of Fox's new season, and popular series like "24" and "The Simpsons" haven't been on the air with new episodes yet. Other shows aired once or twice and then were pre-empted for several weeks by baseball.

Meanwhile, other networks had the opportunity to get viewers in a weekly habit of watching their shows.

The exciting seven-game World Series between the Anaheim Angels and San Francisco Giants was the lowest-rated ever. Its Nielsen Media Research ratings were 24 percent lower than last year's series.

"Baseball brings a unique set of advantages and a unique set of challenges," said Gail Berman, Fox entertainment president.

The biggest advantage, theoretically, is the Series draws a big audience that sees commercials for your new shows. But some executives believe many of these baseball fans wouldn't normally be interested in Fox.

Baseball certainly didn't help David E. Kelley's new series, "girls club," which finished 82nd in its debut last week.

With postseason baseball on Fox for the next four years, the network will have to re-evaluate its strategy, Berman said.

"I think we're really going to have to examine how we roll out our season because it puts us at a distinct disadvantage, there's no question about it," she said.

For the week, Fox averaged 16.3 million viewers (10.2 rating, 16 share). CBS had 12.6 million viewers (8.4, 13), NBC had 11 million (7.5, 12), ABC had 9.4 million (5.9, 10), the WB had 4.6 million (2.9, 4), UPN had 3.9 million (2.5, 4) and Pax TV had 1.2 million (0.9, 1).

NBC's "Nightly News" won the evening news ratings race, averaging 11 million viewers (7.9 rating, 15 share). ABC's "World News Tonight" had 10.6 million viewers (7.5, 15) and the "CBS Evening News' had 8.8 million (6.2, 12).

A ratings point represents 1,067,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 106.7 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show.
