Mr. Blaine Merritt (NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C.)



NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. -Blaine Merritt, "W4SLP", age 80, of North Augusta, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday morning, October 22, 2002, at his residence. A native of Milligan, TN, he had resided in South Augusta for approx. 47 years prior to moving to North Augusta in 1995. A WW II U.S. Naval Veteran, he was transferred to Fort Gordon where upon being discharged from active duty he continued his military career as a Naval Reservist from which he retired in 1962 as a Chief Petty Officer. He continued as a Civil Service employee serving as a Signal School Instructor at Fort Gordon until retiring in the mid 1980s with 40 + years of service. Mr. Merritt further worked in Security at Plant Vogtle for approx. 2 years and the Rouse Company at the Augusta Mall for approx. 10 additional years. An avid Amateur Radio Operator, known as "W4SLP"; He was a Charter Member and Elder at Fleming Christian Church. He is survived by: his loving wife of 58 years, Adelaide Merritt, NASC; their son, Alan and his wife Sharon, NASC; three brothers, Otis Merritt, Dothan, Ala., Gordon Merritt, Johnson City, Tenn., Wayne Merritt, Panama City, Fla.; two sisters, Verna McIntyre, Marion, Va., Charlotte Keller, Daytona Beach, Fla.; one granddaughter, Kellie Merritt, Augusta; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., today, Friday, October 25, 2002, at Fleming Christian Church with Ministers Marshall Bender and Gary Boyd officiating. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be: Deryl Owens, Billy Parham, Bobby Parham, Robert Turner, Joe Salas, and Vic Reese.
