COLUMBIA - The Columbia Inferno, behind five goals in the second period, defeated the Augusta Lynx 8-1 on Thursday in East Coast Hockey League action.
Tim Smith's shot from the left circle was tipped past Augusta goalie Geoff Faulkner by Chris Pittman at the post for a power-play goal and 1-0 lead with 5:36 to play in the first period. Justin Morrison then tipped a Barrie Moore shot over the goalie's glove 4:10 later. Faulkner entered the game leading the ECHL in goals-against average at 1.19 (it rose to 2.51 after Thursday's game). Faulkner had allowed just five goals in his previous five games.
After Morrison scored to make it 3-0, Augusta's Likit Andersson drove Smith into the boards. Columbia's Eric Labelle responded and Philippe Lakos grabbed him from behind while Lance Galbraith punched the Inferno winger. Galbraith was thrown out of the game and could be suspended pending a referee's review of the game tape. The result was a seven-minute power play for Columbia during which Morrison scored three times, setting a franchise record with four goals in a game.
