We can unequivocally say there is a new event in town. It is "The Post Party" that occurs every First Friday of the month at approximately 11 p.m., after art lovers are safely home.
Thugs, druggies and disorderly drunks have made an event for themselves after the event that Augustans have enjoyed for years.
I am an artist and take the liberty of speaking for others who create. Every First Friday in the past we have enjoyed being a part of friends and neighbors visiting with each other and us in our galleries and restaurants. The potential tragic loss is the mind-set of Augustans who may think their downtown to be unsafe.
On First Friday, instead of the previous cultural event - having a nice dinner with an exhibition of art that they may own - there could be boarded windows. Yes, that could mean downtown merchants being unable to keep their restaurants, stores and galleries operating as usual.
It is my desire for all to know that a few unscrupulous people have put much at risk. All should be vigilant to regain control and help preserve this wonderful Augusta phenomenon called First Friday.
