CBS, the WB doing well in prime-time television ratings

NEW YORK -- Two weeks into the new television season, the smiles are widest at CBS and the WB network.

CBS won the ratings competition for the second week in a row behind its powerful Monday and Thursday night lineups. CBS said its audience was 21 percent higher last week than the comparable week in 2001.

The WB's audience is 33 percent higher this season than last, with the drama "Everwood" establishing itself as a family-friendly companion to "7th Heaven," and "Smallville" blossoming into a breakout hit.

The WB had its best ratings ever last week among the 18-to-34-year-old demographic that it targets.

Some experts believe the WB is grabbing some of the young viewers who might otherwise be watching Fox, which is immersed in the baseball post-season.

CBS had 12 of the 23 top-rated shows for the week, with its two "CSI" franchises both in the top five. The network's new drama "Hack" is doing unexpectedly well.

NBC's new "American Dreams" drama won its first head-to-head competition with the CBS comedy duo "Becker" and "Bram and Alice" on Sunday night. The season premiere of "Law & Order" drew 19 million viewers.

One concern for NBC is the decline of the Emmy-winning "The West Wing," down 28 percent in viewers during the first two weeks compared to last year.

ABC, desperate for good news, was encouraged last week by the performance of its Tuesday night comedies, particularly "8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teen-Age Daughter" and "Life with Bonnie."

"ABC, while still having a number of problems, may have stopped the bleeding," said Steve Sternberg, an analyst with ad buying firm Magna Global.

For the week, CBS averaged 13.3 million viewers (8.8 rating, 15 share), NBC had 12.6 million viewers (8.4, 14), ABC had 9.5 million (6.2, 10), Fox had 8.1 million (5.5, 9), the WB had 5 million (3.2, 5), UPN had 4.1 million (2.6, 4) and Pax TV had 1 million (0.7, 1).

ABC's "World News Tonight" won the evening news ratings race, averaging 9.4 million viewers to the 9.2 million of NBC's "Nightly News" (both 6.8 ratings, 14 shares). The "CBS Evening News" had 7.9 million viewers (5.6, 11).

A ratings point represents 1,067,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 106.7 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show.
