Outdoors calendar



NOTE: All the listed events are open to the public, although membership in some organizations may be required.

Sept. 5-7: The Quail Unlimited/Realtree Celebrity Dove Shoot includes three days of hunting, dining and entertainment in Augusta, Edgefield and Allendale. Call 803-637-5731 for ticket/sponsor information.

Sept. 7-8:The 22nd annual Georgia Trappers Association convention will be held at Columbia County Fairgrounds with events for kids, families and adults. Admission is free and the public is invited. Programs include shooting, trapping and wildlife management demonstrations, education programs, a fish fry and other events. Call 796-3243 for more details.

Sept. 20-21: An archery-only hunt will be held at Bussey Point at Thurmond Lake. Bucks must have four or more points on one side. Check-in required. Call 1-800-533-3478, ext. 1159 for details.

Sept. 21, 24 and 28: The Rivers & Glen Flyfishing School, which includes lessons on casting, equipment, knots, clothing, stream ecology, etiquette and other topics, will be taught by Dacre Stoker, Carl Hammond-Beyer and Randy DeGrow. Cost is $150. Call 738-4536 for details.

Sept. 21-22: A&M Fish Camp, three miles below New Savannah Bluff Lock and Dam at the Dead River, will hold its first Savannah River Fishing Tournament. Camping is $5 per night. Entry fee is $25 and payout is $100 plus trophies for catfish, bream, crappie and bass. Call 803-827-1236 for details. Sign-up forms are available at local tackle stores.

Sept. 25: A fly casting course will be offered from 6-9 p.m. by Augusta State University's Continuing Education Department. Instructors will be John Thompson and Perry Houck. Rods and equipment will be provided. Cost is $49. Call 737-1636 to register.

The Fort Gordon Sportsman's Club meets on the third Thursday night of each month at 6 p.m. Membership is open to the public. The shooting range (7A) will be open to the public for firing and zeroing in rifles. A 3-D archery range also is available. Cost is $6 per person ($3 to club members).
