Mr. Gordon Cox (NORTH AUGUSTA, Ga.)

NORTH AUGUSTA, Ga. - Funeral services for Mr. Gordon Cox, 73, of Crestview Drive, North Augusta, who died August 23, 2002, will be conducted Monday morning at 11a.m. from the Grace United Methodist Church, Dr. James C. Adams officiating. Interment in Pineview Memorial Gardens. Mr. Cox was a native of Marion, Ill. having made North Augusta his home for the past 49 years. He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church and the Round Table Sunday School Class. Mr. Cox was retired from E. I. DuPont and Westinghouse at the Savannah River Site and was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War. Mr. Cox was also retired from the U. S. Army Reserves. For the past 33 years, Mr. Cox served as the North Augusta Area Coordinator of the Red Cross Blood Mobile and was a member of the Aiken County Chapter of the American Red Cross Board of Directors. He was a member of the Palmetto Boys State Board of Directors, a member and former Commander of the Jesse C. Lynch Memorial American Legion Post No. 71 and a member of the Forty and Eight Voiture 1177. As a Dixie Youth Baseball Coach for 20 years, he received the Danny Jones Memorial Award as an outstanding leader for South Carolina Dixie Youth Baseball and also served as a coach for the North Augusta Pee Wee Football League and the North Augusta Youth Basketball League. Mr. Cox was an active leader in the North Augusta Community having received the following awards, North Augusta Chamber of Commerce, 1984, Citizen of the Year Award, 1981, North Augusta and District Sertoma Club Service to Mankind Award, 1990 and 1995 Time to Care Award, 1990 Westinghouse Savannah River Company Community Service Award, 1990 and 1991 American Legion Recognition Award, the 1972 Legionnaire of the Year Award presented by the Jesse C. Lynch Memorial American Legion Post No. 71, and the American Legion 2000 Distinguished Public Service Award, 2000 Chairmans Award of the Aiken County Chapter of the American Red Cross, North Augusta High School Friend of the School Award and the National Daughters of the American Revolution 1997 Excellence in Community Service Award. The City of North Augusta honored Mr. Cox by proclaiming June 8, 1999, as Gordon Cox Day. Survivors include his wife, Judith Mann Cox; three sons, Marty L. Cox, Oak Ridge, N.C., Thomas G. Cox, North Augusta, and R. Craig Cox, Charlotte, N.C.; a daughter, Carol Attaway, North Augusta; a brother, Trevor Cox, Naperville, Ill.; 12 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Jesse C. Lynch Memorial American Legion Post No. 71 and the Round Table Sunday School Class. Active pallbearers will be Kristopher Roof, Jarrod Bruder, Harvey Drennan, Byron Neely, Joe Long, Al Lown, Michael Strauss and Clayton Dyson.
