Fred Dorset of Augusta, whose fast time on other legs of the flight gained him many points, was not to be found. Mr. Dorset was in third place at the time. Bad weather in Jackson, Miss., delayed yesterday's takeoffs.

First, smell the fruit. Then check the color - the background should be gold or yellow. (A red or blush color indicates variety, not ripeness.) A well-defined crease should run from the peach's stem to its point.

Other things to consider about produce:

  • Choose fresh-looking fruits and vegetables.

  • Make sure produce is not moldy, bruised or slimy.

  • Don't buy anything that smells bad.

  • Buy only what you need, because produce does not store well.

  • Handle produce carefully so it does not bruise.
