Grandmother charged over girl's death
EAST POINT -The grandmother of a 3-year-old girl who died from head injuries last week surrendered to authorities early Tuesday.
East Point police issued a warrant for Beverly Headspeth's arrest late Monday, and Ms. Headspeth surrendered at about 2:21 a.m., police said.
Last month, Alexis Headspeth was hospitalized with head injuries after her grandmother claimed the girl almost drowned in a bathtub. The child was eventually taken off life support.
Ms. Headspeth was charged with child cruelty in the first degree.
Bond set for man in hand-grenade case
ATHENS -A federal judge has set a $50,000 bond for an Elbert County man charged with manufacturing hand grenades without a license.
Greg Giannoni, 42, of Elberton, also was ordered under house arrest with electronic surveillance.
Last month, Mr. Giannoni was charged with possessing unregistered weapons after federal agents and Elbert County sheriff's deputies served a search warrant at his home. Authorities seized 600 hand grenades and more than 30 rifles and handguns.
Police charge man in molestations
TIFTON -A man whose game room was once a hangout for young people has been charged with molesting children, and authorities said he videotaped some of the acts.
Donnell Collins was charged with aggravated child molestation, three counts of child molestation and enticing a child for indecent purposes.
Mr. Collins ran a game room until he closed it and turned it into a video production company, which produced The Donnell Collins Show, a gospel music program featuring local artists. The show was taken off the air last week after Mr. Collins' arrest.
Vice detail suspended after fatal shooting
ATLANTA -Police Chief Richard Pennington has suspended undercover vice operations aimed at prostitution after an officer shot and killed a suspected prostitute - one of four fatal police shootings in the past three months.
The officer shot the woman four times early Monday after she sprayed him with pepper gas and stabbed him in the face and arms when he tried to arrest her, police said.
On July 10, another vice officer shot and wounded an 18-year-old woman after she stabbed him during a prostitution arrest.
