Suspect in killings remains in Arizona

LaFAYETTE -A Georgia man charged in the shooting deaths of two brothers in Walker County refused to sign extradition papers Monday.

Donnie Allen Hulett, 21, who was arrested Friday in Casa Grande, Ariz., will remain in an Arizona jail until an Aug. 27 extradition hearing.

Georgia police suspect Mr. Hulett of killing Larry Phelps, 62, a retired Whitfield County educator from Dalton, and Arvine Phelps, 69, a retired Dalton State College professor from Rocky Face. They were shot while clearing brush near a residence in Villanow for teenagers who have been in juvenile court.

Police say officer shot woman in self-defense

ATLANTA -An undercover Atlanta police officer shot and killed a suspected prostitute early Monday after she attacked him with pepper spray and stabbed him in the face and arms when he tried to arrest her, authorities said.

Police said the officer shot the woman four times.

"He fired in defense of himself," Sgt. S.R. Traylor said.

The officer's condition was stable at Grady Memorial Hospital. The names of the woman and the officer were not immediately released.

Billboard owners agree to inspection

SNELLVILLE -Two billboard companies reached an agreement Monday with the city, which had ordered the companies to remove six of their signs after a giant billboard collapsed last week, killing three men.

Under the agreement, the 60-foot-tall billboards will be taken down by Friday and inspected, with the companies paying for the inspections and any repairs needed. The city had ordered the signs down by 5 p.m. Monday.

Snellville promised to lift a moratorium on new billboards if the signs pass inspection.

Attorneys for Advantage Advertising and Trinity Outdoor had asked for a court injunction to block the city's order. One sign belongs to Advantage and five to Trinity.

Collision kills 2 teens, sends one to hospital

CONYERS -Two teenagers died Sunday in a head-on collision in Rockdale County. Another teen, a passenger, survived the wreck.

Police did not immediately identify the victims. The two Rockdale County teens were said to have attended high school there.

Authorities said the crash occurred on Oglesby Bridge Road near the Henry County line. A 15-year-old passenger was reported in serious condition in Atlanta's Grady Memorial Hospital on Sunday night.
