South Carolina sees economic growth

South Carolina's economy continued to improve in June, helped by a strong housing sector and low unemployment, according to a recent joint report from the University of South Carolina and the state's employment security commission.

Residential construction "continues to benefit from low mortgage rates and unemployment rates that are, by historical standards, quite low," the report said. The state's unemployment rate fell from 5.6 percent in May to 5.5 percent in June.

Microsoft opens its Windows secrets

WASHINGTON - Microsoft Corp. is disclosing more technical information about its Windows operating system products in order to comply with a federal antitrust settlement under consideration by a judge, the company announced Monday.

The technical information will help software makers write programs that work as well with Windows as Microsoft's products do.

HBO plans to release 'Sopranos' food items

NEW YORK - The television network HBO is producing comedies, dramas, movies ... and marinara sauce.

HBO is branching out into food as an ancillary business to The Sopranos, the drama about a New Jersey mob family that begins its fourth season in September.

Warner Books, an HBO corporate cousin, will publish The Sopranos Family Cookbook: As Compiled by Artie Bucco, a collection of southern Italian-style recipes. Mr. Bucco is the fictional owner of the Nuovo Vesuvio restaurant in the TV series.
