Seminar works to resolve anger

Overcoming faults and snuffing out temptations have been the stuff of Bill Gothard's seminars for nearly 40 years.

But when it came to anger, people left "still angry," said Mr. Gothard, during a phone interview from his Oak Brook, Ill., office at the Institute of Basic Life Principles.

Either he and his staff didn't understand the causes behind anger or the Biblical principles were inadequately presented, he said.

"We aren't interested in temporary relief. We want lasting results," he said

The Institute introduced "Anger Resolution," in March, 2001, and will present it simultaneously with two other seminars - the Basic Seminar, which applies scriptural teachings to life's problems, and the Children's Institute, which tailors similar information to young people - at Warren Baptist Church, 3203 Washington Road.

Classes run from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and resume at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 27. Anger Resolution ends at noon. The other classes end at 6 p.m.

Registration is $75 per person with a $25 discount for married couples.

At least one parent must attend an adult seminar for young people, age 6-12, to enroll in the Children's Institute. A $25 discount is available starting with the second child in the Children's Institute.

Seminar alumni can attend for free. An alumni's spouse or family can attend for $50.

Fees include some workbooks and textbooks.

"Anger is not the problem. It is for our safety - either to fight or flee," Mr. Gothard said. "But if we allow the anger to continue, to nurse it, to feed it, it turns into wrath, then malice, the desire for revenge."
