COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Dr. Robert Peele is resigning as the University of South Carolina's athletic team physician after nearly 20 years.
Peele, 52, said the school didn't pressure him to leave, and also didn't totally close the door on never working with college athletes again.
"It's been a great time," Peele said. "I've enjoyed it a lot ... I think it's to the betterment for myself, for my wife and my children and for the student-athletes that they see different faces, maybe forever."
The university didn't pay Peele. He did receive a $1,000 stipend when he became director of the Gamecocks' drug-testing program, but otherwise he was reimbursed for his work on athletes by insurance companies.
