Bill Maddox resigned Wednesday as chairman of the Augusta-Richmond County Coliseum Authority, joining a growing list of defections and firings since management company SMG left in May.
Board attorney Sam Nicholson resigned June 1. General Manager Reggie Williams was fired two weeks ago after complaints during the North Georgia Annual Conference of United Methodists; assistant general manager Linda Roberts, who was tapped for interim general manager by the authority, immediately went on sick leave and has not been seen or heard from since; board member Jack Usry resigned shortly thereafter.
Now Mr. Maddox, citing medical conditions that impair his sight, will turn the board over to Vice Chairman Joe Scott. A nomination committee was appointed to oversee the official election of a new chairman.
Mr. Maddox said he was ready to leave the board anyway, but did not say why.
"I don't know what's best, but this board needs to come together," he said during the meeting.
Mr. Maddox's last official action was to vote to hire Capers, Dunbar, Sanders & Bruckner as the authority's legal counsel, breaking a 4-4 tie. His announcement came shortly afterward.
Mr. Scott, who voted against the hiring, left immediately after the vote and was not present for Mr. Maddox's announcement.
