ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. - An autopsy has been scheduled for a Williston, S.C., man who died during a weekend outing on the Georgia coast.
Alonzo Dicks, 53, had gone into the ocean at the former U.S. Coast Guard station at East Beach to assist teen-agers who were struggling in the water, said Cpl. Glenn Hester of the Glynn County Police Department.
Others at the beach helped the teen-agers out of the water, but then noticed Mr. Dicks had gone beneath the surface, Cpl. Hester said.
The people rescued Mr. Dicks from the ocean and he was resuscitated at the scene, Cpl. Hester said.
Glynn County emergency workers transported Mr. Dicks to Southeast Georgia Regional Medical Center, where he died about 7 p.m. Saturday.
Mr. Dicks was breathing at the beach and when he arrived at the hospital but then lost consciousness, said Glynn County Coroner Jimmy Durden.
Physicians tried for about 30 minutes to save him, Mr. Durden said.
Police said they are investigating.
