Columbia Co. commissioner paves the way

For those of us Columbia Countians who love to ride bikes and who have wanted a Greeneway of our own, the June 13 Metro story, "Group will design regional bike plan," was wonderful news.

Thanks to Commissioner Frank Spears, Columbia County will have a paved bike path from Stevens Creek Elementary to the Savannah Rapids Pavilion by December. Eventually linking Evans to downtown Augusta by way of the canal towpath, the bike path will make the Savannah Rapids Pavillion and Park more accessible.

This bike path will complement Columbia County's investment in the Savannah Rapids Pavilion and together with the Augusta Canal Authority's improvements to the canal head gates make the park an even more enjoyable venue.

Commissioner Spears should be commended for his vision and determination in getting this project underway.

David C. Crews, Martinez, Ga.
