Man dies after break-in

AIKEN - An Aiken man died early Tuesday morning after being shot several times during a home invasion, police said.

Rickie A. McBride, 24, was shot in the legs, buttocks and stomach at about 3:30 a.m. in his apartment in the 300 block of Jehossee Drive, said Capt. Michael Frank, of the Aiken County Sheriff's Office.

Three men forced their way into the home, situated directly behind Citizens Park, and demanded money from Mr. McBride and a roommate.

After the attack, the roommate drove Mr. McBride to Aiken Regional Medical Centers, where he later died, Capt. Frank said.

The captain said investigators are pursuing leads but have no descriptions of the three men.

He said the roommate saw only one of the men who entered his darkened bedroom wearing masks.

Capt. Frank said investigators believe that at least two of the intruders had guns but didn't know whether one or both of them fired.

A neighbor, the Rev. James Jackson, pastor at New Beginnings Baptist Church on Trolley Line Road, said Mr. McBride had moved into the apartment two or three months ago.

The slaying is the first this year investigated by the sheriff's office.

Anyone with information about the crime is asked to call the sheriff's office at (803) 922-9709 or Aiken County Crime Stoppers at (866) 883-7463. Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward up to $1,000.
