South Carolina, Clemson each produce first round pick

South Carolina's Drew Meyer became the highest draft pick in Gamecock history when the Texas Rangers selected the shortstop 10th overall in Tuesday's draft.

Meyer was the second college player picked in the draft. Ball State pitcher Bryan Bullington was the first overall pick by the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Three picks later, the San Diego Padres selected Clemson shortstop Khalil Greene with the 13th pick overall. The senior will take a 30-game hitting streak into this weekend's NCAA super regional against Arkansas.

The Padres then took Greene's teammate, junior first baseman Michael Johnson, with their second-round pick. Johnson has hit 21 home runs so far this year.

Then in the 10th round, Gamecock senior first baseman Yaron Peters and senior pitcher Gary Bell were picked back-to-back.

Peters, the 2002 Southeastern Conference player of the year with 27 home runs and 89 RBIs, was taken by the Atlanta Braves.

Peters, who has gone 20-7 over the past two seasons with a 4.07 ERA and 160 strikeouts, was drafted by the New York Yankees.

The draft runs through Wednesday and can last up to 50 rounds.
