ROSWELL, Ga. - Augusta State's men's golf team is tied for sixth place after the first day of play in the NCAA East Regional tournament at Settindown Creek Golf Club.
The Jaguars, led by Emmett Turner and Oliver Wilson with 2-over-par 74s, trail first-round leader Clemson by 13 strokes. Augusta State also counted a 75 by Michael Webb and a 76 by Jay Haas Jr. Scott Jamieson's 79 was discarded in the format that counts the four best scores for each team.
The top 10 finishers in the 54-hole event will advance to the NCAA Championship tournament, which will be held May 29-June 1 in Columbus, Ohio.
Clemson was the only team to break par and finished with a 2-under total of 286. The Tigers were paced by D.J. Trahan's 69, and also counted a 1-over 73 by Aiken's Matt Hendrix.
Georgia Tech is in second place with a team total of 291. Georgia Southern is tied for sixth with Augusta State at 299, Georgia is tied for 12th at 300 and South Carolina is tied for 14th at 301.
Freshman Alex Hamilton of Aiken lead the Gamecocks with an even-par 72. Kyle Bradley of North Augusta also shot even-par 72 to lead College of Charleston on Thursday.
Former Lakeside golfer Jay Mundy shot 72 to pace Auburn, while North Augusta's David Sligh shot a 4-over 76 for Furman.
