In response to the city's ban on swimming in the river and the canal, I agree wholeheartedly with Ruth Ann Oglesby's May 1 letter. As a young boy, I grew up in National Hills and spent many a day at the canal and river, as well as in the canal and river.
As a father, I have taken my children to the levee for a swim in the river. In the hot summer nothing could feel better than a dip in the river.
If we ban swimming, we may as well ban hot dogs. My gosh, there is no telling how many people have choked on them.
Certain areas are not safe, but don't just ban all access.
