NURSING HOME OPTIONS

Things to consider when selecting a nursing home:

  • What type of activities are in the social program?
  • Is there adequate privacy?
  • How's the food? Sample it.
  • Is it clean?
  • Does the staff seem happy? Watch how they treat each other.
  • Does the staff appear competent? Talk to them.
  • How many residents must a staff member care for, especially in the evening?
  • Does it provide special services such as ventilators and transportation to doctors?
  • Does the staff have special Alzheimer's training?
  • What is the policy regarding prescriptions?
  • Can they meet potential residents' special needs?
  • What are the visitation rules?
  • What about cost and notice of increasing rates?
  • CORRECTING A LAWN PROBLEM

  • Eliminate all weeds and excessive thatch. Weeds can be removed by chemical means, while thatch will need mechanical work.
  • Cultivate the soil by coring, slicing or spiking the ground.
  • If necessary, correct the soil pH.
  • Apply the recommended amount of fertilizer. A starter fertilizer such as 6-12-12 or 5-10-15 is good. Apply about 20 pounds per square foot.
  • If the lawn is overseeded, drag, rake or brush the seed down into the soil.
  • Water as soon as possible after planting. Don't allow new material to become dry.
  • Mow when grass reaches 1 1/2 times its normal mowing height.
