ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Asheville Tourists starting pitcher Charles Merricks (4-1) scattered five hits over five innings in defeating Augusta 4-1 at McCormick Field on Sunday.
Merricks hit center fielder Antron Seiber with the bases loaded to score right fielder Daniel Figueroa, giving the GreenJackets a brief, 1-0 lead in the second inning. But Tourists shortstop Hector Tena singled in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the inning, and Augusta could muster no more offensive the rest of the way.
Solo home runs by Alvin Colina in the seventh inning and Chris Testa in the eighth provided insurance for Asheville.
Kason Gabbard (0-4) yielded two runs off four hits and remained winless for Augusta, despite striking out six batters over five innings. Leadoff hitter Juan Salazar, who went 2-for-5, was the only GreenJacket with more than one hit.
Judson Songster, Ryan Speier and Alex Serrano combined to pitch four scoreless innings for Asheville, surrendering only two hits. Serrano pitched the ninth to record his sixth save of the season.
The GreenJackets, 16-15 and 3 1/2 games out of the Southern Division lead, are off today before opening a seven-game homestand at Lake Olmstead on Tuesday. Augusta faces Savannah in a three-game series before South Georgia comes in for three, followed by a single game against Capital City on May 13.
