An Augusta man was stabbed to death early Saturday morning, and police have charged his roommate with murder.
Johnny Henderson, 42, of the 1500 block of Wylds Court, was stabbed with a butcher knife in the left shoulder about 4:36 a.m., Deputy Coroner Mark Bowen said.
The victim was pronounced dead about 5:50 a.m. at the residence, Mr. Bowen said. The preliminary cause of death is listed as loss of blood, a conclusion arrived at because of the amount of blood found inside and outside the apartment, Mr. Bowen said.
"I'm pretty sure an artery was cut," he said.
(The body) will be sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab in Atlanta today for an autopsy, he said.
Maj. Ken Autry of the Richmond County Sheriff's Office said the homicide occurred after an argument between Mr. Henderson, and the accused, 19-year-old Kirby Deon Roland. Police apprehended Ms. Roland later Saturday at her uncle's apartment in Vintage Creek Apartments on North Leg Road, the major said.
Ms. Roland was charged with murder and possession of a knife of during the commission of a crime. She was being held at the Richmond County jail without bond.
Maj. Autry said this is the fourth homicide handled by the sheriff's office in 2002. It was almost 100 days into the year before the first homicide was reported. This year's first slaying was reported April 13, after the body of Gary Collins, of Evans, was found in a duplex on Jefferson Street.
"We all know ... homicides (are) not predictable," Maj. Autry said. "If we went three months (without a homicide) then had one back-to-back, that's part of it."
