BACK IN TIME

MAY 4, 1968

An alarming increase in the number of indigent ambulance service calls has resulted in plans for a complete study of the service, Richmond County Commission Chairman Matthew W. Mulherin said yesterday.

The service will more than double its $27,000 budget if the present rate continues. Mr. Mulherin said he will call a meeting between the commission and Richmond County Ambulance Service next week to look into the problems.

CAR SEAT SAFETY

National SAFE KIDS Week Continues through May 11. Here are the five most common car seat mistakes.

  • The car seat isn't secured tight enough into the vehicle (There should be less than one inch of side-to-side movement at the belt path).
  • The harness straps aren't snug enough (You should not be able to pinch up material).
  • The retainer clip is at the wrong level (It should be at armpit level, to prevent a child from being ejected if a wreck occurs).
  • Infants are put in a forward-facing car seat too soon (To ride in a forward-facing seat, the infant must be 1 year old and 20 pounds. If both requirements are not met, do not turn the seat around.)
  • Convertible infant seats are placed in the car seat base with the handle up. Although it might look like a great place to hang toys, in a wreck, the handle could snap and impale the child, and the toys hanging from the handle could go straight into the child's face and eyes.
