Joseph Echols Sr., M.D. (AUGUSTA, Ga.)

AUGUSTA, Ga. - Joseph Martin Echols Sr., M.D., 76, died Friday, March 29 at University Hospital. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Veal Echols. Memorial services will be held at noon today, April 2, 2002, at First Baptist Church of Augusta with the Rev. Dr. Timothy Owings officiating. Additional survivors include two sons, Dr. Joseph Martin Echols Jr., Augusta, and Randall L. Echols, Charlotte, N.C.; two daughters, Elise Echols Poole, Spartanburg, S.C., and Elaine Echols Weston, Augusta; one brother, Rev. William Standard Echols, Lake Wales, Fla.; and nine grandchildren, David R. Johnston III, Joseph Echols III, Natalie Echols, Randy Echols, Catherine Echols, Julia Echols, William Weston V, Elizabeth Weston and Jason Simon. Dr. Echols attended Emory University and was graduated from the Medical College of Georgia. His internship was at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta and he completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at University Hospital, Augusta. He was Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Randolph Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, during the Korean War. In 1953, Dr. Echols returned to Augusta and joined OB/GYN Associates of Augusta, where he practiced for 42 years until his retirement in October 1994. Dr. Echols was a Diplomat of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Dr. Echols was a former member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church where he served as a trustee and was currently a member of First Baptist Church of Augusta. He served as a member of the Augusta Advisory Board of Nations Bank of Georgia. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Gamewell Watson, Dr. John C. Mitchell, Dr. William Bruns, Dr. Paul M. Thaxton, Dr. George Williams, Dr. Harold Jarrell, Mr. Ernest L. Jones, Mr. Ralph Veal, Dr. Robert Waller and Dr. Henry Althisar. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the First Baptist Church of Augusta, 3500 Walton Way, Augusta, GA 30909; or to the American Heart Association, 246 Davis Road, Augusta, GA. 30907.
