NOTE: All the listed events are open to the public, although membership in some organizations may be required.

Through March 15: Applications for public hunting permits for Fort Gordon can be sent to Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Game Management, 142 Bob Kirk Road, Thomson, GA, 30824. TODAY: Fort Gordon Sportsmans Club will hold a bass tournament from daylight to 2 p.m. at Butler Reservoir. Call 791-5078 for information.

WEDNESDAY, SATURDAY: Perry Houck and John Thompson will offer a flyfishing class from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Augusta State. The $49 cost includes rods and gear. Call 737-1636 to register.

SATURDAY: The 33rd Annual South Carolina Turkey Calling Contest will be held at the National Wild Turkey Federation offices in Edgefield, S.C., beginning at 10 a.m. Call 803-637-3106 for information.

SATURDAY 16: A hike into Tallulah Gorge organized by the Sierra Club's Savannah River Chapter will require participants used to physical exercise. Call 869-8770 for information.

March 19: Salamanders, turtles and other wildlife from Savannah River Ecology Lab will be part of the Sierra Club's 7:30 p.m. program at the Unitarian Church, Walton Way Extension. Visitors welcome. 863-2324.

March 23: A free class on saltwater flyfishing for redfish and cobia will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon at Rivers & Glen in Augusta. Instructor is David Murray of Beaufort. Call 738-4536.

June 8: Fort Gordon Sportsmans Club will hold a Kids Fishing Derby from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Clay Pit II and III. Call 791-5078 for information.

The Fort Gordon Sportsman's Club meets on the third Thursday night of each month at 6 p.m. Membership is open to the public. The shooting range (7A) will be open to the public for firing and zeroing in rifles. A 3-D archery range also is available. Cost is $6 per person ($3 to club members).
