The closing of Macy's in the Augusta Mall has sent the city into a tailspin. Consumers are panicked. Questions abound. What to do? Where to go? How to get there?
Cannily, sensing the public's desperate mood, Augusta Mayor Bob Young has suggested a letter-writing campaign to protest the closure.
As ardent an admirer of the mayoral mind as I am, I believe he has overlooked a solution right under his very nose. In view of the overwhelming public response to the mayor's Amtrak bus to Savannah and its miraculous effect on the long-term viability of the entire Amtrak system, isn't the answer obvious?
For the mayor's information, the shoppers of Augusta demand a Macy's bus to Atlanta. Our flagging consumer spirit needs reviving and so does Macy's, Inc. Think of it: Two birds with one bus. We and our shopping bags are ready to roll.
