After trying for months and getting no qualified applicants for Augusta's proposed in-house legal department, Commissioner Lee Beard came to the conclusion that maybe City Attorney Jim Wall isn't so bad after all. And so Wall will stay in the job that keeps the city's ox from being legally gored.
Wall will also get to hire his own three staff attorneys, rather than have the commission do the hiring for him as proposed by meddling Commissioner Marion Williams, who sought to veto any hires Wall would make.
But reason prevailed Wednesday and all other commission members agreed that Wall must be able to hire his staff. If he's good enough to be city attorney, he's good enough to hire his own people.
It's heartening to see the city bring this dragged-out debate to a close, keep Wall and move to address the many issues facing the commission. This is progress that we applaud.
