AUGUSTA, Ga. - Entered into rest Friday, February 22, 2002, at University Hospital, Mr. Waddell Hearst Pate, 97, of Aumond Place East, Augusta, loving husband of Mildred Green Pate. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Monday, February 25, 2002, at Curtis Baptist Church with Dr. Mark E. Harris and Rev. Sherrell Dunn officiating. Interment in Hillcrest Memorial Park. (Mr. Pate will lie in state 1 hour prior to the service). Mr. Pate, born February 6, 1905, was the son of Alexander Waddell and Mattie Payne Pate. He was a graduate of Atlantic Christian College of Wilson, North Carolina and was the Golden Gloves Champion of North Carolina 1937 and 1938. He moved to Augusta and developed Hillcrest Memorial Park real estate, hotels in Georgia, North and South Carolina. He was remembered in Wilmington, N.C., for finding a beached German submarine, WWI variety complete with German crew. With his father, he was a developer of beach and resort properties in Wilmington, N.C. He is preceded in death by his son, Waddell Amerson Pate and is survived by two daughters, Polly P. Wilson, Augusta, and Lydia P. Dugan, Houston, Texas; two step-children, Monie Green McNamee, Birmingham, Ala., and Aaron Green, Augusta; seven grandchildren, Patrick William Dugan, Robert Wilson, Matthew W. Wilson, Lydia Elizabeth Belger, Waddell Jordan Pate, Darien McDonald Pate and Janet Holmes; and six great great grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made to Curtis Baptist School, 1326 Broad Street, Augusta, Ga. 30901.
