ORANGEBURG, S.C. - Hammond OCain "Butch" Carter, 62, died Sunday, February 3, 2002, at his residence. Graveside funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 6, 2002, at Memorial Park Cemetery, Rev. Thurmond Johnson officiated. Mr. Carter was born in Orangeburg, a son of Mrs. Mattie OCain Carter and of the late Freddie Edward Carter. He was a retired executive director from SC E.M.S. Management Association. Mr. Carter was a charter member of the board of directors of the Midlands E.M.S. Association, former member of the Johnston Jaycees and former chaplain, and a former county administrator of Edgefield County. Mr. Carter was listed in the Whos Who of America. He was a member of Johnston United Methodist Church. Mr. Carter served in the U.S. Army. Survivors include son, Freddie Reed Carter, Easley; daughter, Mrs. Al (Cindy) Bryan, Edgefield; mother, Mrs. Mattie O. Carter, Orangeburg; sister, Mrs. Barbara C. Smoak, Orangeburg; fiancee, Cynthia Robinson, Lancaster; 7 grandchildren. He was predeceased by two sisters, Freddie Carter Harmon, Marian Carter Hunt. Memorials may be made to a charity of ones choice. Dukes-Harley Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
