Vaughan shares first-round lead in South African PGA tournament

PRETORIA, South Africa -- Bruce Vaughan shot a 6-under-par 66 and shared the lead with four others Thursday after the first round of the South African PGA Championship.

David Higgins, Andrew McLardy, Tim Clark and Michael Kirk also shot 66s on the 7,434-yard Woodhill Country Club course.

Sandeep Grewal, in contention for last week's Dunhill Championship, opened with a 71 and was tied with Mark McNulty.

Vaughan, a regular on the Southern African tour, has been battling with his putting over recent months.

"This is quite a turnaround from the way I've been playing," he said. "I haven't been making putts. That was the difference today."

Clark, who recently won the South Africa Open, complained that his putting wasn't good enough.

"I thought my SA Open win sorted that out, but I think it's just a case of me not having played tournament golf for so long," he said. "I'm just not comfortable with the putter."

The tournament is sponsored by Telkom
