Featured obituary: Mrs. Hellon Oglesby

JACKSON - Hellon Oglesby knew a lot about raising children.

Besides being a mother of three, Mrs. Oglesby worked in the nursery at Matlock Baptist Church for 31 years, her son said.

"She loved all the time she spent with (the children)," said her son Kelvin. "She enjoyed the freshness they brought to class and their eagerness to learn about Jesus."

Mrs. Oglesby, 60, of Old Jackson Highway, died Thursday at University Hospital after a long illness.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. today at Matlock Baptist Church. Interment will be at 3 p.m. at St. Matthew Lutheran Church Cemetery, Creston.

A native of Orangeburg County, Mrs. Oglesby made her home in Jackson and was a member of the Women's Missionary Union; Jordan Circle; Young at Heart; and Paul, Barnabas and Silas Sunday School Class.

"She was eager to lend a hand with anything that needed to be done," Mr. Oglesby said.

She is also survived by her husband, Gene C. Oglesby; another son, Leonard C. Oglesby, Jackson; a daughter, Wanda E. Oglesby, Jackson; her mother, Inez Lowry, Cameron; two brothers, Michael Lowrey, Lexington, and Johnny Lowrey, Santee; two sisters, Frankie Hoffmeier, Stillwater, N.Y., and Annette Outlaw, Cameron; and two grandchildren.
