Here's a list of some of the special services being held at area churches:

FAMILY CANDLELIGHT SERVICE: More than 50 children will act out the Christmas story as told in the gospel at the 5 p.m. family candlelight service at Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church, 2261 Walton Way, across from Appleby Library. A candlelight communion service with music will be at 11 p.m. The sanctuary is being renovated, so the services will be held in the gymnasium next to the church.

FAMILY CHRISTMAS GATHERING: An informal service designed for families with young children will be at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Augusta, 3500 Walton Way. The service will include Christmas scripture, stories and music. A candlelight communion service will be held at 5 p.m. For more information, call 733-2236.

RADIO BROADCAST: St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 605 Reynolds St., will hold Christ's Mass, a Eucharist service with brass, percussion and the St. Paul's choir at 10 p.m. The service will be broadcast live on radio station WGAC-AM (580). St. Paul's 4 p.m. Eucharist service for adults and children will feature the church's Canterbury, St. Cecilia and St. Nicholas choirs with trumpet and drums.

NINE LESSONS AND CAROLS: A Christmas concert featuring an orchestra and the youth and adult choirs of St. John United Methodist Church, 736 Greene St., will begin at 10:30 p.m. A Service of Nine Lessons and Carols will follow at 11. For more information, call 724-9641.

MIDNIGHT MASSES: Two Augusta Catholic churches are holding midnight Masses. Midnight Mass at Church of the Most Holy Trinity, 720 Telfair St., will be preceded by a service of carols beginning at 11:15 p.m. Other Masses will be at 4 and 6:30 p.m. The 6:30 service includes a children's pageant. Midnight Mass at St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church, 1420 Monte Sano Ave., will be preceded at 11:30 p.m. by a vigil of carols presented by the church choir and a brass quintet. Other Masses will be at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. A live nativity will precede and follow the 7 p.m. service. For more information, call 733-6627.

SUNRISE SERVICE: Good Hope Missionary Baptist Church will hold a sunrise service at 6 a.m. The church is at 710 E. Cedar St., off Sand Bar Ferry Road in downtown Augusta. For more information, call 722-1031.
